Helping Those Impacted by Sex Addiction
Presenter: Cat Etherington, BA(Counsel), CPC, ERCEM
SASA invites therapists, therapy students and group facilitators to attend our July training on working with those impacted by sexual addiction (SA)/problematic sexual behaviours (PSB). Catherine (“Cat”) Etherington, director of recovery at the UK’s Naked Truth Recovery will run two 1/2 day trainings in Auckland, with an online option for remote attendees. The first half of the day will be on “recovery basics” and the second on facilitating sex addiction groups. This is a unique opportunity to learn in person from a renowned sex addiction therapist and head of an international organisation specialising in sex addiction and betrayal trauma.
SA/PSB: Recovery Basics
Auckland
July 28, 2023, 9:30AM-12:00pm
Starting out in recovery from problematic sexual behaviours may not be straightforward. So, where do we start with clients who are using sex in ways that are addictive, compulsive and problematic?
Cat will offer some practical and theoretic solutions to the problem of sexual addiction, starting with the basics of education, defining boundaries, understanding triggers and relapse prevention. She will share some of the tools she has developed and adapted to support the work of Naked Truth Recovery. Cat will also reflect on the longer term work of recovery from problematic sexual behaviours and how this may differ from other addictions, focusing on the attitudinal changes that constitute emotional and sexual sobriety.

SA/PSB and PSA Group Facilitation
Auckland
July 28, 2023, 1:30-4:00pm
Studies consistently show that participation in a recovery group is rated by recovering addicts as “the most helpful” or one of the top three most helpful activities they did on their journey. This goes just as much for those recovering from SA/PSB. That said, studies also show that poorly facilitated groups can contribute to relational abuse and domestic violence, which are already common in partnerships and marriages impacted by SA/PSB.
In this session Cat Etherington, director of recovery, at Naked Truth Recovery will look at group facilitation best practices, and offer specific insights into SA and betrayal trauma support groups that can help the peer or therapist facilitator to make these groups both safe and effective for participants.
Naked Truth has run internationally based online groups since its inception and today offers a range of groups—with relational recovery, and betrayal trauma, open-processing groups offered each day of the week in many time zones.
Please note that Cat will also be running two two-day therapeutic events while in New Zealand for those impacted by SA/PSB and betrayal trauma.
